We Visited the Cape Agulhas
Cape Agulhas is the southernmost tip of Africa, and is located 109 miles, or around 175,42km southeast from Cape Town. The name may refer to jagged rocks or reefs that have wrecked many ships, but another explanation states that Portuguese navigators observed their compass needles, and they showed no magnetic interference when they were at this location, with their so called “needles” stuck in stone. This might have been what influenced its naming!
In 1849, a lighthouse was established on the Agulhas Banks to help mariners navigating through this dangerous area. The cape’s meridian, 20° E forms the official boundary between Indian ocean and Atlantic Oceans! My brother is on the Atlantic Ocean side, while I am on the Indian Ocean side.
Just when I think that it can’t get any better, life gives me another chance to explore all of the Cape Aghulas’s beauty. Half of me is on Atlantic Ocean and my other half is on Indian Ocean.
Here’s a photo of my dad in front of Cape Agulhas lighthouse.
